Frederick Edward Allen (1885-1919) of Martham
Frederick is listed on the War Memorial as one of those who gave his life during the First World War.
Frederick was born on 28th April 1885 in Martham and was baptised on 2nd May 1886 at St Mary’s. He was the second child of John Frederick Allen and Sarah Jane, nee Turner. He had three siblings, namely: Jane Elizabeth, Walter John, and Alice Pricilla. He died on 31st March 1919 in Salonica, Greece, aged 33. When he was 30, he married Beatrice Cornelius, daughter of George Cornelius, on 1st August 1915 at Christ’s Church, Bloomsbury, London. They didn’t have any children.
He was included in the census in 1891 when living with his parents in White Street, Martham, aged 5 and at school. He was in the census in 1901 as lodging at Snape Road, Leiston, Suffolk where he was a servant/apprentice grocer & draper. In the 1911 census he lived at 15 Dagmar Terrace, Alexandra Place, Muswell Hill and was a grocer’s assistant.
By 1915 he was in the Royal Artillery and was a driver living at Boyton Park, Codford, Wilts according to his marriage details. He served in the military in 1919 in the 57th Brigade Royal Field Artillery. His military serial number was Driver 60648 “B” Battery. He was killed in 1919 in Greece and is buried in the Mikra British Cemetery, Kalamaria, Greece. (Grave 1329).
Mikra British Cemetery is situated in Kalamaria in the City of Thessaloniki just off Konstantinou Karamanlis Street between the army camp of Ntalipi (pronounced Dalipi) and the Kalamaria Greek Communal Cemetery.
